Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Religion plays a crucial role in shaping the political preferences and voting behavior of individuals, especially in regions where religious identity is closely tied to political loyalty and engagement. In Nigeria, where a significant portion of the population identifies with either Islam or Christianity, religious affiliations often influence political decisions and electoral outcomes (Olayemi & Kabir, 2023). Yola South LGA, Adamawa State, offers a unique case study due to its diverse religious composition, with both Muslim and Christian communities interacting in a complex political environment. This study will explore how religion affects voter behavior and political preferences in Yola South LGA, investigating whether religious affiliation influences voting patterns, party allegiance, and candidate selection (Bala & Abubakar, 2024). The findings will help deepen the understanding of the relationship between religion and politics in Nigeria, particularly in the context of local elections.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Religious beliefs often play a significant role in shaping political preferences and influencing voter behavior, with individuals frequently voting along religious lines.
